As summer comes to a close, the weather starts to cool and the leaves begin to change… there is no better time than to head to the mountains! Nestled in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina, the delicious food, stunning views and luxurious hotels make Asheville our next #luxelistapproved destination.
One of the largest draws to Asheville is the Biltmore Estate. Built by George Washington Vanderbilt II between 1889 and 1895, it is still the largest privately owned residence in the United States. Starting with the 3-mile approach road the over the top grandeur is evident everywhere you look. The landscape of the estate was designed by Frederick Law Olmstead - the man famous for designing Central Park in NYC. Once the Biltmore House comes into view, you will feel as if you've been transported to a castle in France. The 4-story mansion is available for tours - and totally worth it! The main tour will take you through the main living area of the house, a few of the prominent bedrooms and then allows you to explore the outdoors. There are several extended tours that will show you additional features of the house such as the roof, chambermaids rooms and tours of the carriage/stable houses. If you happen to be going around Christmas time… do NOT miss the Candlelight Christmas Evenings! During the Christmas Evenings tour you get to explore the Biltmore House by candlelight and firelight reminiscent of the first Vanderbilt family Christmas in 1895… complete with lit up Christmas Trees, wreaths and roaring fires in their massive fireplaces!

In addition to the Biltmore House, the Biltmore Estate features two of our favorite hotels in the Asheville area - The Inn at Biltmore Estate and The Village Hotel on Biltmore Estate. The Village Hotel is the more moderate, casual of the two hotels. It is close to the Biltmore Village where you will find the winery, shopping and some dining options. The Inn at Biltmore Estate is a 4-star hotel with two restaurants, a spa and 210 rooms. Each property offers multiple packages that can include your entrance fees and audio guides to tour the Biltmore House, as well as the rental of bicycles, jeeps, horseback tours and more.

If you are looking for a hotel that is located outside of the Biltmore Estate, look no further than ((my favorite!!)) The Omni Grove Park Inn. The Omni Grove Park Inn is a AAA-4 diamond hotel with a $50 million, 43,000 square-foot subterranean spa. The Inn is perfectly nestled into the beautiful mountains surrounding Asheville and every detail of the hotel mimics that. The lobby has a beautiful floor to ceiling stone fireplace surrounded by rocking chairs that provides the perfect place to cozy up after a long day of outdoor adventures. While all of the guest rooms at the Grove Park Inn are impeccably designed, there is nothing that compares to their Club Rooms. The Club Rooms are exclusive, 21 years +, that come with spa-like bathrooms featuring a bath and walk-in shower. However, the best part of the Club Rooms is the daily access to the therapeutic water features of their world class spa. You cannot go wrong with any of the services the spa offers… if getting a treatment is not on the agenda for your stay, at least opt in for a day pass so you can check out their amazing spa amenities including: exhilarating contrast pools, inhalation rooms, saunas and eucalyptus-infused steam rooms.

Asheville has also been known for its growing culinary and craft beer scene. Breweries such as New Belgium, Hi-Wire and Funkatorium brewing companies are located in Asheville and all offer tours, as well as have tasting rooms. For breakfast, my favorite go-to is Biscuit Head, whose motto is “Put some South in your mouth.” With menu offerings that range from a Fried Catfish Biscuit, Pulled Pork Biscuit, Mimosa Fried Chicken Biscuit all the way to The Asheville Benedict … the options are endless! They even have amazing gluten free biscuit options for those who can’t eat wheat! Before dinner, be sure to grab a drink and enjoy the sunset terrace at the Omni Grove Park Inn – the views cannot be beat! For dinner I tend to stick with what I know, and The Admiral never disappoints! Their cuisine is inventive and delicious and is moderately priced. ((Be sure to make a reservation… tables are tough to get))
Asheville is the perfect destination for couples looking to get away from the daily stress of life. From the stunning views to the fresh mountain air, Asheville finds a way to rejuvenate your soul. If you have the time to add in a few spa treatments while you are there – even better! The impeccable service, delicious cuisine, and overall peaceful atmosphere of Asheville makes it a #luxelistapproved destination.
